IntelliTrace is All Mine!!

Yes, you read me right, IntelliTrace™ is All Mine. And by "All Mine" I mean that me and an extremely talented and skilled group of people at Microsoft comprise the team that makes the magic that is IntelliTrace™ happen. I also mean that it is "All Mine" in the sense that my boss told me that if IntelliTrace fails he will hold me personally responsible. No pressure. :-)

Ok, let me expand on that a bit. I am the new Program Manager for the IntelliTrace™ feature that is delivered as part of Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate. I have the primary responsibility of working with the team to determine the direction that the product will take so that we can deliver the most valuable feature that we can. What does that mean? Well, really it means that I want IntelliTrace™ to be everything that you want it to be. I personally believe that Intellitrace™ is an extremely cool feature that, from my experience, is underutilized. For an introduction to the feature check out my blog post from a while back.
Since writing that post and the final release of Visual Studio 2010 I have been keeping a bit of an eye on how many people that have the Ultimate SKU either use or even know about IntelliTrace™. Surprisingly few.
So here are a few asks of you.

  • If you use Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate but don't know what IntelliTrace™ is let me know.
  • If you use Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate and know what IntelliTrace™ is but don't use it, tell me why not.
  • If you use Visual Studio 2010 and use IntelliTrace™ give me your feedback.
Comments to the blog are great or you can email me. My email is larrygug at well, you guess the rest... ;-)

My company all has the VS 2010 Ultimate MSDN Subscription. I know about intellitrace and think it is just amazing.

Sadly we don't use it yet. We are migrating to TFS 2010 currently (and have been for a while now).

Once we are done, then the testers can start capturing intellitrace logs and sending them to us. Once that happens, I plan to train all the developers on the joys of intellitrace.

So, basically, intellitrace is great, if you have the infrastructure to use it. Until you do, it is less useful (still nice, but less useful).
